Credentials
Kirk brings nearly a quarter-century of federal criminal defense experience to The Bell Firm. He spent more than two decades with the Kansas Federal Public Defender, most recently serving as First Assistant Federal Public Defender for the District of Kansas, where he represented more than 1,800 clients in federal court. Before joining the Federal Public Defender’s office in 2002, Kirk practiced at the Kansas Appellate Defender Office and the Kansas Death Penalty Defense Unit, building a career grounded in some of the most demanding work in criminal defense.
Kirk earned his law degree from the University of Kansas School of Law in 1998. In 2017, he received the Kansas Gideon Award in recognition of his commitment to the right to counsel and his service to indigent defendants across the state.
A dedicated teacher of the craft, Kirk has taught Trial Advocacy at Washburn University School of Law and trains incoming CJA panel attorneys through the Second Chair program, passing on the courtroom skills and judgment built over thousands of federal cases.
At The Bell Firm, Kirk continues that work — bringing deep trial experience, a rigorous understanding of federal criminal practice, and a long-standing commitment to defending the rights of the accused.
